This is our most highly recommended 12V battery, it is designed to constantly be trickling power to the appliance, and if it is frequently charged, such as with our solar charging system, it will be reliable and long lasting.

A question we are often asked is 'can I use a car battery for my clay pigeon trap?' The answer is twofold:

The main difference between a leisure battery and a car battery is their design. A car battery is designed to provide a large amount of power in a short burst to start a car engine. A leisure battery is designed to provide a smaller amount of power over a longer period of time to power various appliances such as in a caravan or motorhome or a clay pigeon trap.

Car Batteries

Car batteries are typically lead-acid batteries with a high cranking amperage (CCA) rating. CCA is a measure of how much current a battery can provide for a short period of time. A car battery with a high CCA rating will be able to start a car engine more easily, especially in cold weather.

Car batteries are also designed to withstand the vibration and impact that occurs when a car is driven. They have a thick outer casing and are made with materials that are resistant to corrosion.

Leisure Batteries

Leisure batteries are also lead-acid batteries, but they have a different design than car batteries. They are designed to provide a lower amount of current over a longer period of time and have a higher amp-hour (AH) rating than car batteries. AH is a measure of how much energy a battery can store. A leisure battery with a high AH rating will be able to power appliances for a longer period of time before needing to be recharged.

Leisure batteries are also designed to be more tolerant of deep discharge than car batteries. Deep discharge occurs when a battery is used up to a very low level of charge. Car batteries should not be deeply discharged, as this can damage the battery. Leisure batteries, on the other hand, can be deeply discharged without being damaged.

Which type of battery should you use?

So, in summary if you need a battery to start a car engine, then you should use a car battery. Car batteries are designed to provide a large amount of power in a short burst, which is what is needed to start a car engine. As a clay pigeon trap is not a car, or anything like one a leisure battery is the recommended choice as they are designed to provide a lower amount of current over a longer period of time, which is what is needed to power a clay pigeon trap. They can also be trickle charged with using a small specialised solar panel which will keep the battery charged whilst not harming the battery in any way.
