Simulated Game Shooting Explained

Simulated game shooting uses clay targets to recreate the variety, pace and challenge of traditional game shooting. By carefully positioning traps and designing target presentations, it is possible to produce realistic driven, crossing, flushing and high bird targets that test timing, technique and target reading.

Simulated game has become increasingly popular for training, recreation and corporate shooting days, as well as providing an enjoyable way to stay sharp during the closed season.

The best simulated game systems are designed around the targets you want to create rather than the machinery itself.

Important factors include:

  • The size and shape of the shooting ground
  • The number of guns shooting at any one time
  • The type of targets you want to produce
  • Whether the system needs to be mobile or fixed
  • How much flexibility you want in the future

Some grounds benefit from compact trailer-based systems, while others require traps spread across a large area to create realistic drives and varied target presentations.

A good simulated game setup should provide realistic target presentations while remaining reliable, practical and easy to operate.

Key qualities include:

  • Consistent target performance
  • Adjustable target angles and trajectories
  • Reliable radio control systems
  • Easy transportation and deployment
  • The ability to create varied target presentations
  • Robust construction for long-term outdoor use

The best systems allow layouts to evolve over time, keeping shooting days fresh and challenging.

Simulating Different Types of Game

Driven Birds

High driven targets remain one of the most popular simulated game presentations. By combining height, distance and timing, these targets reward good technique and careful target selection.

The Simulated Game ATV Quad Trailer is particularly effective for creating realistic driven bird presentations. By spreading traps across the ground, targets can be introduced from different positions and heights, creating drives that feel natural, varied and challenging.

Pheasant Shooting

Driven pheasants rarely present the same target twice. Some arrive high overhead, others drift across the line, while some appear unexpectedly from behind natural cover.

The Simulated Game ATV Quad Trailer allows traps to be positioned across woodland rides, valleys and open ground, making full use of the terrain to create realistic pheasant-style target presentations.

Partridge Shooting

Partridge presentations often require fast crossing targets and varied lines that test reactions and target reading.

The Simulated Game Triple Trailer is well suited to creating coordinated paired and driven presentations from a compact setup, making it an excellent choice where flexibility and ease of deployment are important.

Grouse-Style Shooting

Grouse-style presentations rely on tightly packed targets moving together at speed. The challenge comes from maintaining focus on a dense pack that changes direction while retaining its shape.

The Double Duplex was designed specifically for this style of shooting. By synchronising multiple Duplex bases, targets move together as a coordinated pack, creating realistic grouse-style presentations that remain challenging and unpredictable.

Bespoke Target Presentations

No two grounds are the same. Woodland, valleys, banks, open fields and natural contours all present opportunities to create something unique.

Our Bespoke Systems are designed around the ground and the targets you want to create. Whether that involves high driven birds, crossing targets, flushing presentations or something entirely different, our engineering team can help turn an idea into a working simulated game system.

Why Acorn?

Every shooting ground is different.

With over 30 years of experience in clay target systems, we've worked with everyone from private individuals and syndicates through to clubs, estates and commercial shooting grounds.

That's why Acorn designs simulated game systems around your requirements rather than forcing you into a standard package. From compact trailer systems through to large-scale multi-trap layouts, our aim is always the same: realistic targets, reliable equipment and enjoyable shooting.

All Acorn products are designed and manufactured in the UK by our own engineering team, giving us complete control over quality, performance and long-term support.

Whether you need a single simulated game position or a complete shooting layout, we'll help you build a system that works for your ground today and can adapt to your requirements in the future.
